The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced a threefold increase in monthly allowances for paramount chiefs and queen mothers across Ghana.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, 20 April, the Minister said the allowance has been raised from GHC1,000 to GHC3,000 in 2025.
According to him, the increment marks a significant policy shift from the previous administration, under which traditional leaders received GH¢1,000 monthly for several years without adjustment.
“The ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, increased the allowance of paramount chiefs from GHC1,000 to GHC3,000. For the last eight years, our chiefs were stagnated in the allowance they were receiving. It was GHC1,000. In 2025, he (the president) increased it by 300%, and increased it by 300% for the paramount queen mothers,” Ibrahim stated.
He explained that the decision reflects the government’s renewed commitment to recognising the role of traditional authorities in governance, conflict resolution, and community development.
The Minister added that chiefs and queen mothers continue to play a critical role in local administration and social cohesion, making it necessary for the state to provide improved financial support.
The allowance adjustment is expected to benefit paramount chiefs and queen mothers nationwide, as part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and traditional institutions.
