Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
The victory makes him the party’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming by-election scheduled for March 3.
The primary, held on Saturday, drew attention amid reports of alleged vote-buying and inducement involving some aspirants.
Provisional results showed that Mr Jamal polled 431 votes to beat his closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, who obtained 399 votes.
Mr Mohammed Ramne secured 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azimdow had 45 votes, while Mr Najib Sani recorded one vote.
Earlier, the NDC national leadership condemned what it described as widespread incidents of bribery at some polling centres and announced that investigations had commenced into the allegations.
A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, warned that any candidate found guilty would face disciplinary action.
The party added that future incidents could attract severe sanctions, including the possible annulment of election results.
