President John Dramani Mahama has formally inducted Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie into office as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra, marking the final step after Parliament endorsed his nomination earlier in the month.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, whose judicial career spans the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, was nominated by President Mahama on September 23, 2025. His extensive experience and years of service within the justice system formed the basis of the president’s choice.

He had already been performing the duties of Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the suspension and subsequent removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised transparent and inclusive leadership. He also reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening judicial independence and expanding access to justice nationwide.

Parliament voted on his nomination on November 13, approving him by a margin of 163 votes to 69. This parliamentary endorsement paved the way for his official induction today.

With his oath now taken, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie fully assumes the mantle of Chief Justice, entrusted with steering the judiciary and safeguarding the nation’s constitutional order.
