Tensions are running high in Ayamfuri, Upper Denkyira West District, following a confrontation between a 26-year-old tricycle rider and a group of Northerners (commonly referred to as Abochie men) involved in illegal mining activities, popularly known as Galamsey.
The incident has sparked fear among local residents.
The tricycle rider, identified as Abbey, was called to pick up the Abochie men and their loads from a remote mining site. Upon reaching their destination, Abbey allegedly charged them GHS 200, but the men declined and offered to pay only GHS 100, which he refused to accept.
What initially appeared to be a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into violence when the Abochie men reportedly attacked Abbey, hitting him with a stick.
The altercation triggered a larger confrontation when some residents of Ayamfuri, who heard Abbey’s cries for help, joined in. The clash between the town boys and the Abochie men turned into a mass brawl, with some shops reportedly damaged in the process.
The incident occurred in the late hours of Wednesday, April 9.
In an interview with Denkyiraman Radio, reporter Yaa Oforiwaa described the current situation as calm, stating that the Ayamfuri Police intervened promptly to restore order.
