The Mpraeso Circuit Court has denied a bail application for 28 individuals who have been remanded in connection with the alleged kidnapping of the Abetifihene, Kwahu Adontenhene Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III.
The suspects are part of a group that stormed the Abetifi Palace with the intention of destooling Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, who currently serves as the President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.
The group, which includes an elderly woman, was remanded on November 8 during their first court appearance. Efforts made by their lawyer, Nkrabea Effah Dartey, to secure bail for them during a subsequent hearing on Thursday, November 14, were unsuccessful.
The court, presided over by Her Lordship Adwoa Akyemaa Ofosu, ordered that the suspects remain in police custody and scheduled their next court appearance for November 27, 2024.
In a statement to Adom News, the lawyer representing the accused expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision. In contrast, Nana Saka Darko, the spokesperson for the Abetifi Palace, commended the court for its ruling as investigations into the incident continue.
Initially, local residents believed that the men were National Security operatives. Reports indicate that they were led by Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, the Abrewatia of Kwahu, to the Abetifi Palace, where they detained Asiedu Agyemang III.
