A family at Assin Odumase in the Central Region has been left devastated following the disappearance of their relative’s body at the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary, just hours before his scheduled burial on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Mr George Kwame Antwi, a 40-year-old Presbyterian Church steward, had been deposited at the mortuary since September 2025 in preparation for his funeral.

However, when family members arrived to retrieve the body for burial, they were informed that it could not be found. Subsequent checks at the police station revealed that Mr Antwi’s body had allegedly been mistakenly released and buried about three months ago by another family, who reportedly confused it with that of their 75-year-old deceased relative.

Further information indicated that the remains of the 75-year-old individual are still at the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary.

The mix-up disrupted a well-organised funeral ceremony, leaving mourners stranded and the bereaved family counting significant financial losses.

The Antwi family has since called for a court-ordered exhumation of the wrongly buried body, compensation for expenses incurred, and a thorough investigation into the conduct of the mortuary staff to prevent a recurrence.

Police are yet to officially comment on the matter.
