Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a strong warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, urging them to desist immediately. He emphasized that lawmakers must lead by example and refrain from activities that harm the environment. Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, Bagbin stated that any MP found engaging in galamsey would face consequences, as the House would not tolerate such illegal actions.
“If any of you happen to be involved in galamsey, please advise yourselves. You must be prepared as a House to bite the bullet. We must lead and show the way,” he cautioned. Bagbin further urged MPs to disclose the names of colleagues engaged in the act, stressing his commitment to ensuring accountability. He warned that if he received credible information about any MP’s involvement, Parliament would take immediate action. His remarks come as galamsey continues to devastate Ghana’s environment, particularly water bodies and forests.
The Speaker reminded MPs of their duty to uphold the law and contribute to national development rather than engaging in harmful activities. He urged them to focus their time in Parliament on policies that will positively impact the nation rather than exploiting natural resources for personal gain. His call reinforces the government’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, which remains a major challenge despite efforts to curb it.
