Deputy Finance Minister Defends Spending Amid Mid-Year Budget Review

Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Ampem Nyarko has dismissed allegations by the Minority that the government’s recent economic gains are deceptive and merely a result of limited public spending.

The Minority had claimed that the government’s economic stability was due to a failure to release budgeted funds to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as to contractors.

Nyarko strongly refuted these assertions, describing them as false. He assured that the 2025 mid-year budget review presentation would expose the inaccuracies in the Minority’s claims.

“At the end of this presentation, you’ll realize that contrary to what the opponents have been saying — that we are not spending — we are indeed spending,” he stated. “You’ll hear the details about it.”

Addressing updates to the Fees and Charges Act, Nyarko explained that delays were due to the government’s broader and more strategic review approach. He noted that fees and charges had not undergone a comprehensive review in about three years, prompting the current administration to act.

He confirmed several key adjustments, including:

  • The reintroduction of road tolls
  • New charges by the Narcotics Control Commission, particularly related to cannabis regulation

Nyarko emphasized that these revisions are based on current economic realities and are designed using the cumulative inflation factor to preserve the real value of government fees and charges.
