Staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in protest of delayed allowances and unmet compensation agreements.
The industrial action, led by the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), seeks to compel the government to address longstanding concerns, particularly the non-payment of the Operational Support Allowance.
PSWU General Secretary, Bernard Adjei, criticized the government for failing to honor agreements made in 2024. He noted that no payments have been made since January 2025, despite multiple appeals, leading to growing frustration among staff.
The strike is expected to disrupt key NIA services nationwide, including the issuance of Ghana Cards, placing further strain on public service delivery.
According to the PSWU, all efforts to resolve the matter amicably have failed, and workers will not return to their posts until their demands are fully met.
This is not the first industrial action by NIA staff. In June 2024, a similar walkout over delayed allowances led to a temporary halt in NIA operations across the country.
The current strike, union leaders say, underscores the deep-seated frustration of workers who feel their contributions continue to be neglected.
