The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, is set to appear before Parliament in a week’s time to provide an update on the recent outbreaks of cholera and cerebrospinal meningitis in parts of the country. His summons follows growing concerns over the alarming rise in cases, with over 400 reported cholera infections and 14 deaths from meningitis in the Upper West Region. Parliament is seeking clarity on the government’s response to these public health crises and the measures in place to curb further spread.

The directive for the Minister’s appearance was issued by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor after a request from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who pressed for immediate action. Afenyo-Markin specifically called for increased medical personnel at the Winneba Health Facility, where cholera cases have overwhelmed resources. He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, citing the strain on local hospitals treating affected patients.

As the Member of Parliament for Juaboso and a National Democratic Congress representative, Akandoh is expected to present a comprehensive report detailing current interventions, future preventive strategies, and resource allocation to affected areas. His appearance before Parliament will provide a crucial opportunity for lawmakers to scrutinize the government’s handling of these outbreaks and push for enhanced public health measures to protect citizens.
