The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed over GH₵200 million to healthcare facilities across the country for claims payment. This significant funding coincides with the launch of free dialysis services for kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), starting on Sunday, December 1.
Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, announced, “The NHIA has released over GHS200 million today as claims payment to healthcare facilities nationwide as free dialysis treatment begins.”
This initiative follows the NHIS’s announcement on November 30, 2024, regarding accredited health facilities that will provide free dialysis treatment throughout Ghana, effective December 1, 2024.
The policy, unveiled by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, aims to alleviate the financial burden on kidney patients covered by the NHIS. It builds on a successful pilot program conducted earlier this year that targeted patients under 18 and those over 60.
This comprehensive rollout is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on kidney patients across the country and ensure equitable access to essential dialysis services.
