Between January and October 2024, a total of 524 lives were lost to road accidents in the Ashanti Region. This figure is part of the 2,038 fatalities recorded nationwide during the same period.
These statistics were revealed during the ‘Akwan So Dwoodoo’ road safety awareness campaign organized by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and various road safety advocacy groups.
The campaign aims to promote road safety in the lead-up to and during the Christmas festivities.
During a press conference, Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), emphasized the urgent need to improve knowledge and promote responsible driving practices to combat the increasing incidence of road crashes. He urged drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, and other stakeholders to enhance road safety campaigns and remain vigilant on the roads, especially as the Christmas season approaches.
Other officials at the event also stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and reminded the public that protecting lives during this festive season is a shared responsibility.
The campaign called on all road users to prioritize safety and to avoid actions that could endanger lives as the Christmas celebrations draw near.
