NRSA Reports 1,237 Road Deaths in First Half of 2024, Calls for Stricter Traffic Adherence

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that approximately 1,237 people lost their lives in road accidents between January and June 2024.

The NRSA attributed most of these fatalities to drivers’ failure to observe road signs.

Leveraging this, Central Regional Director of the
National Road Safety Authority, Ms Linda Afotey Annang spoke with Chief Justice on Denkyiraman radio’s National Agenda, to account on occurrences in the Central Region alone.

Ms Linda Afotey Anang stressed the need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic occurrences.

According to her, the number of road accidents in 2024 compared to 2023 was decreased, 237 accidents and 48 deaths.

“The contributory factor on the Central East heading on to Central Region might be as a result of head-on-collision, and it is as a result of wrongful overtaking and overspeeding, after long waits in traffic.
Research has shown that about 90% of our drivers plying our roads do not adhere to speed limits.”

She however noted that pedestrian knockdowns in the Central Region as compared to 2023 which was 50 have been increased by 24 in 2024.

“This should tell that drivers do not have patience along the road for pedestrians, our behaviors and attitudes on the road must be changed to ensure low level of accidents, especially in the era of elections in the country”,she added.

Ms Linda Afotey Annang assured that aside from Education on the media, there are district road Safety Committees helping and a code of ethics for political parties to ensure more Education in various areas.
