Residents of Yamfo in the Ahafo Region are calling on the police to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the alleged murder of Richard Antwi Agyei, a 30-year-old nurse at the Yamfo Health Centre.
The community is demanding transparency and accountability to ensure justice is served.
Tensions escalated after police from Duayaw-Nkwanta conducted a raid in areas allegedly known for marijuana use and trade. During the operation, Richard Agyei was reportedly arrested and assaulted by officers before being pronounced dead at the Yamfo Health Centre.
Following news of his death, chaos erupted on Friday, April 4, as angry youth stormed the Yamfo Police Station, where the officers involved had taken refuge. Some residents attempted to attack the officers and set the charge office on fire.
Military personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) intervened to restore order, firing warning shots to disperse the crowd. During the confrontation, one resident was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.
Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, leader of the Yamfo Youth Association (YYA), expressed gratitude to the Ahafo regional police and the GAF for their swift response in de-escalating the situation.
Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor, has pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. He reassured residents of a transparent process and promised that anyone found culpable will be held accountable.
This incident has raised widespread concerns in the Yamfo community, with many calling for urgent reforms and justice for the late nurse.
