Ibrahim Salifu, leader of the Okada riders in Dunkwa-On-Offin, has thrown his support behind the government’s decision to legalize Okada operations in Ghana.

Speaking to Denkyiraman News, Mr. Salifu acknowledged public concerns about the misuse of Okada bikes, particularly reports linking some riders to criminal activities. However, he emphasized that the Okada riders’ association has a strong leadership structure that enforces discipline and ensures members are well-trained and law-abiding.

“We have strict rules. Any member who violates them is sanctioned, and if necessary, we hand them over to the police,” he said.

Mr. Salifu noted that legalizing the Okada business is crucial, especially as many young people remain unemployed but fear joining the trade due to its current unregulated status.

He further encouraged passengers to report any misconduct by riders either to the police or the association, assuring that prompt disciplinary action would be taken.

Several riders also appealed to the government to speed up the legalization process, citing daily challenges they face on the road. One rider shared his struggle, saying:

“It needs to be legalized because I am unemployed. If my bike is seized because it’s illegal, I’ll be forced into things like robbery just to feed myself and my family.”

In conclusion, Mr. Salifu addressed rumors about riders handing over bikes to unregistered individuals. He promised swift action, stating that the association would investigate and deal with such cases promptly.
