Police Officer Drowns During Anti-Galamsey Operation in Central Region

Tragedy struck in the Central Region of Ghana at rise of Thursday, 3 April, as Constable John Kwabena Dogbe, a dedicated police officer, lost his life during an operation against illegal mining (galamsey) in the River Offin at Assin Asaman.

The incident occurred when suspected illegal miners fled, and Officer Dogbe slipped into the water while trying to seize and destroy mining equipment.

Despite a meticulous four-hour search, he was unable to recover and was later confirmed dead at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.

The Central North Regional Police Command has expressed deep condolences over the loss of Constable Dogbe, who was part of the broader effort to protect the environment and tackle illegal activities in the region.

The police force has pledged to continue its operations against galamsey, despite the heavy toll this incident has taken.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death has been launched, and efforts are ongoing to address the broader issue of illegal mining in the region.
