New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s alleged plan to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, calling it a betrayal of his commitment to women’s empowerment. In a statement signed by Chairperson Janet Nabla, the party argued that this move contradicts Mahama’s campaign promises, particularly his pledge to implement the Affirmative Action Law and ensure 30% female representation in his administration.

The controversy stems from three petitions submitted to the president, requesting the Chief Justice’s removal. While Mahama has stated that he will forward them to the Council of State for review, the NPP believes his actions are politically motivated. They accuse him of using the issue as a distraction from the country’s real challenges and suggest he is laying the groundwork for electoral manipulation ahead of the 2028 elections.
