President John Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing COP George Akuffo Dampare.
The appointment, made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Thursday (13 March).
COP Yohuno, a seasoned law-enforcement officer with 40 years of service, is expected to lead efforts to modernise and transform the Ghana Police Service.
His appointment comes against the backdrop of a lawsuit at the Supreme Court regarding the position of IGP.
Despite the legal proceedings, the government has moved forward with the leadership transition, signalling its commitment to reforming the security sector.
With extensive experience in policing and security management, COP Yohuno is anticipated to introduce a renewed focus on professionalism, public trust and efficiency within the service.
It is expected that Yohuno will be sworn in on Friday 14 March, sources say.
