President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to providing free tertiary education for persons with disabilities (PWDs). Addressing Parliament on Thursday, he announced that individuals with disabilities would be exempt from fees under the government’s proposed no-fee policy, ensuring equal access to higher education. This initiative is part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration’s broader plan to ease the financial burden on students and promote inclusivity in education.
The NDC’s “no-fee-stress” policy will absorb admission fees for all students entering public universities in Ghana. While all students will have their admission fees covered, only students with disabilities will receive a full waiver on tuition fees throughout their studies. This move is expected to provide significant relief to PWDs and their families, allowing them to pursue higher education without financial constraints.
This policy follows the NDC’s extensive 2024 campaign outreach to PWDs, during which Mr. Mahama and his team engaged communities nationwide to discuss ways to expand opportunities for marginalized groups. The president emphasized that his administration remains committed to fostering an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, has equal access to quality education and opportunities for personal growth.
