A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in the Akwatia parliamentary seat saga, as a Koforidua High Court has taken the drastic step of issuing a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the individual declared the winner of the seat by the Electoral Commission.

This move comes after the court found Kumi guilty of contempt, a serious offense that has significant implications for his political future.
The court’s decision is a clear indication that Kumi’s actions were deemed to be in disregard of the court’s authority, and he will now have to face the consequences.

It’s worth noting that Kumi’s victory in the parliamentary election has been shrouded in controversy, with allegations of irregularities and a legal battle ongoing.

Mr Kumi presented himself in Parliament to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.

In a significant ruling, Justice Senyo Amedahe of the Koforidua High Court has found Ernest Yaw Kumi guilty of contempt of court, citing his persistent failure to appear in person throughout the contempt proceedings.

Despite being summoned to appear before the court, Kumi chose not to do so, which the judge deemed a blatant disregard for the court’s authority.

He as well rejected a letter from the minority side of Parliament claiming the MP was busy with parliamentary duties, hence the reason for his continuous absence from court.

Justice Senyo Amedahe took a firm stance, declining to accept a letter from the minority caucus on behalf of Ernest Yaw Kumi, citing that to do so would be a direct contradiction to his own previous ruling.

The judge emphasized that he would not compromise his earlier decision, which had established a clear expectation for Kumi’s personal appearance in court.
