Dame Challenges Ayine to Produce Memo Justifying Withdrawal of Charges Against Bank of Ghana Governor

Godfred Yeboah Dame has called on Dr. Dominic Ayine to back up his claims with solid evidence—specifically, a memo that allegedly recommended dropping charges against Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Essentially, Dame is challenging Ayine to “put your money where your mouth is” and provide concrete proof supporting the decision. He questions the legitimacy of Ayine’s actions and insists on seeing documented evidence that justifies the withdrawal of charges.

Dame asserts that no such memo exists, suggesting that the decision to drop the charges was based on falsehoods. He strongly denies the legitimacy of the move and implies it was made under misleading circumstances, a serious accusation aimed at setting the record straight.

On Wednesday, February 12, Dr. Ayine defended his decision to discontinue the prosecution, citing a case review that exposed significant weaknesses in the evidence. He explained that during his review, he found an internal document from the prosecution team advising former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame to consider dropping the charges due to insufficient evidence for a solid case.

In a media statement, Dr. Ayine emphasized the memo’s significance in influencing his decision:

“My review of some cases revealed critical flaws in the prosecution’s case. For instance, in two ongoing banking trials, I decided to withdraw the charges against Mr. Johnson Asiama because I came across an internal memo from the Prosecution Division, prepared for the attention of the former AG, the Hon. Godfred Yeboah Dame, recommending that the charges be dropped. This is very significant,” he stated.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Godfred Yeboah Dame held a press conference on Friday, February 14, categorically denying the existence of any such memo. He challenged Dr. Ayine to produce the document if it indeed exists.

“Let me state for the record that, to the best of my knowledge, no such memorandum exists. I do not recall receiving any memo from the Prosecutions Division,” Dame asserted.

“I challenge Dr. Ayine to produce such a memo for public examination, as he has claimed it as the basis for his actions during his press conference.”
