Cholera has claimed the lives of two children in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.
Reports indicate that there are a total of 356 suspected cases, with 29 confirmed cases. Currently, 15 patients are admitted to Winneba Municipal Hospital, 10 of whom are in critical condition.
Health workers report that around 100 patients showing signs and symptoms of cholera are expected to be discharged soon. Tragically, the two deceased patients were children, and their bodies are being kept at the morgue for autopsy.
Dr. Douglas Amponsah, the acting medical superintendent of Winneba Municipal Hospital, described the outbreak as alarming in an interview with Nana Ansah. He noted that most of the cases are being reported in the fishing communities along the coast, with a significant number of victims being children and pregnant women.
While health officials are working to contain the spread of the disease and treat victims, Dr. Amponsah emphasizes the need for urgent measures to be taken.
Effutu Municipality has now joined Ajumako, Agona West, and Ekumfi as cholera hotspots in the Central Region.
