President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to restore Republic Day as a national holiday and introduce an additional day off for Eid al-Fitr celebrations. This move aligns with his commitment to recognizing Ghana’s historical milestones and promoting inclusivity in national celebrations. By reinstating July 1 as a holiday, Mahama aims to honor Ghana’s transition to self-governance, while the extra Eid holiday will allow Muslims to fully partake in post-Ramadan festivities.
In addition, President Mahama has proposed the establishment of a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, suggesting it be observed on July 1 to coincide with Senior Citizens’ Day. He emphasized that this day would serve as a moment for national reflection, gratitude, and divine guidance. A committee comprising religious leaders will be formed to organize and oversee the observance of this day.
Speaking in the Western Region, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, expressing gratitude to voters for their support. He assured Ghanaians that his administration would work diligently to deliver meaningful development across the country. The proposed amendments to the Public Holiday Act will soon be presented to Parliament, reinforcing his pledge to restore Republic Day and grant an additional holiday for Eid celebrations.
