Muntaka Mubarak, the MP for Asawase and nominee for Interior Minister, is pushing for the installation of CCTV cameras in all police stations and cells nationwide, highlighting its importance in promoting transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

This move is in line with a Supreme Court directive that every police station should be equipped with night-vision CCTV cameras to record both video and audio, as a way to prevent custodial violence and ensure that police personnel are held accountable for their actions.

The idea is to have these cameras installed in all areas of the police station, including lock-ups, corridors, and even outside toilets, with the footage stored for at least 18 months.

The Member of Parliament During his vetting on Friday, 24th January, stressed that the time had come for the country to take a notable step towards enhancing transparency and accountability within the police service.

“I also believe that the time has come for us to put CCTVs in all our police stations and cells,” he suggested.

“They are not that expensive, but what they do to help us in dealing with all this will be tremendous,” he explained.

Hon. Mubarak also thinks CCTV cameras will help the police address public concerns, prevent abuse, and build trust with the community.
