The National President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Mr. Wepia Awal Adugwala, has lauded the appointment of Hon. Eric Opoku as Minister of Agriculture Designate by President John Mahama. Speaking on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda, Mr. Wepia praised Hon. Opoku’s qualifications as a politician, farmer, and ranking member of Parliament’s Agricultural Committee.
He highlighted key expectations, including constructing a reliable irrigation dam to combat climate change impacts, reducing taxes on agricultural imports, and promoting agro-processing to strengthen the economy. Mr. Wepia also called on the government to source food locally for initiatives like the school feeding program, reducing dependency on imports. Additionally, he urged prioritization of food production and water supply over mining to mitigate the effects of illegal mining on farmland.
Mr. Wepia expressed confidence in Hon. Opoku’s ability to address these challenges and champion farmers’ welfare.
