Mr. Stephen Yani, an educationist, has approved the President’s nomination of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu as the Education Minister Designate.
In an interview with Stephen Yani on Denkyiraman Radio’s National Agenda on Friday, January 17, he stated that many names were considered for the position. However, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu’s selection as the candidate for vetting is not surprising due to his life experience, educational background, legal expertise, and leadership qualities, which make him well-suited for the role.
He emphasized that Hon. Iddrisu should develop the ability to seek help and advice from technocrats to effectively navigate his responsibilities.
Mr. Yani acknowledged that the role assigned to Hon. Iddrisu is a significant one, especially when combined with his duties as a lawyer and Member of Parliament. However, he believes that Hon. Iddrisu has the competence to fulfill the job diligently.
Furthermore, he assured that there could be some changes and reforms in Ghana’s educational curriculum, as the current government has indicated in their manifesto.
“Changes can and should be made, as both the NDC and NPP have stated in their manifestos the importance of establishing a National Education Review forum. This forum would enable a comprehensive review of the educational landscape in the country. I believe measures can be implemented to address various aspects of Ghana’s educational system, including feeding programs and tracking systems, which are essential for improvement,” he added.
Mr. Stephen Yani explained that it would be beneficial to discuss linking education to industry in Ghana to better produce skilled workers.
“While humanities courses such as psychology, history, and political science are valuable, their prevalence is becoming excessive. This trend limits the number of engineering graduates available to address the country’s engineering needs.
We should train individuals who are directly marketable, as is done in developed countries, if we wish to view education on a broader scale,” he concluded.
