Two illegal miners died in a pit collapse at Osino in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region. The accident occurred on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Some individuals were able to escape unharmed.
A rescue operations team, including the police and officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), arrived at the scene at around 1:50 am on Thursday to recover the bodies from the pit.
Unfortunately, the two illegal miners were pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Angela Gyasi at the Osiem Savior Government Hospital. The victims, whose identities have not yet been confirmed, have been taken to the hospital’s morgue.
Another individual, identified as Francis, survived the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
It remains unclear whether there are other illegal miners still trapped in the pit. The local police are investigating the incident.
