President Mahama is considering adding an extra day off for Eid al-Fitr in 2025, which would give citizens more time to celebrate.

In keeping with his campaign promise, President Mahama announced that Ghanaians will receive not one, but two public holidays to celebrate Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan. This decision reflects his commitment to honoring the country’s cultural and religious diversity.

The President made these remarks during a National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10. He emphasized his dedication to respecting the cultural and religious diversity of the nation.

“As part of our promises, we assured the Muslim community that we would add one more holiday to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Once Parliament resumes, we will amend the Holidays Act to officially recognize this additional day for the Sallah festivities,” he stated.

He noted that the necessary legislative processes would be expedited to ensure that the change is implemented this year.

Furthermore, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to making the Hajj pilgrimage more affordable for Muslims. He announced the formation of a five-member Hajj task force, led by Asutifi South MP, Collins Dauda.

Mr. Mahama revealed that this task force would travel to Saudi Arabia the following week to participate in the annual Hajj conference. “One of their primary responsibilities is to negotiate arrangements that will drastically reduce Hajj fares,” he explained. This initiative aims to enable more Muslims who wish to perform the pilgrimage to fulfill this important religious obligation.
