The Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MTTL), Albert Adu Boahen, has highlighted the benefits that the newly inaugurated electric buses will bring to Ghanaians.
On Wednesday, November 27, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia inaugurated Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses (EVs).
During the inauguration, the Managing Director emphasized that the introduction of these buses is aimed at incorporating energy-efficient transportation into the organization’s operations.
He stated, “This initiative is not only about revitalizing the company’s mass transit services but also about positioning MMT as a leader in the transition to electric vehicles in line with the zero-emission agenda outlined in the national electric policy.”
He further added that deploying electric buses is a transformative step that will have significant economic benefits for Ghanaians by reducing operational costs and lowering fuel expenses.
“Fuel costs account for approximately 55% of our revenue from intracity operations. In contrast, the energy costs for these new electric buses will make up only 15% of our revenue. This represents a remarkable 40% savings in operational costs, allowing us to reinvest in expanding and enhancing our services,” he explained.
Boahen noted that part of these cost reductions will be passed on to the public through more affordable fares and a more frequent and reliable service.
“Additionally, electric buses provide a smoother and quieter ride, improving the overall passenger experience,” he emphasized.
Test operations for the buses are set to begin this week, aligning with Dr. Bawumia’s vision of introducing electric vehicles as a cost-effective solution for the transportation sector.
