The Nasara Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Agona West Constituency, Haruna Rashid, is in critical condition. He was shot during a campaign clash in Agona Nyarkrom, Central Region.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on October 27, while Rashid was traveling with the convoy of Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate Chris Arthur. Three other individuals were also injured.
Police sources report that supporters of Chris Arthur and rival candidate Cynthia Morrison confronted each other. They clashed while campaigning in the same area. Tensions escalated when Mr. Arthur’s convoy encountered a roadblock allegedly set up by Ms. Morrison’s supporters. As the convoy attempted to turn away, gunshots were fired, and Rashid, who is also Mr. Arthur’s campaign manager, was struck in the ribs.
Chris Arthur recounted the incident, explaining that as they approached Nyarkrom Township, they faced the blockage. “We decided to change direction, but it was too late,” he stated. Arthur described how unidentified individuals first poured alcohol on their driver. This caused him to lose control of the vehicle. Then, two men approached and shot Rashid.
Rashid was initially rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital. He has since been transferred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment. This was due to the severity of his injuries.
Alhaji Jibri Tanko, the Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, condemned the violence and warned all supporters to avoid intimidation. “We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he stated firmly.
Two supporters from Cynthia Morrison’s camp were injured during the incident. They are receiving treatment at the Agona Nyarkrom Health Center. Investigations continue.
