The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the cancellation of its contract with Yasarko Printing Press Limited. This company was initially chosen to print presidential ballot papers for the Oti and Western North regions. It was also selected to print parliamentary ballot papers for these areas in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
In a press release dated October 25, 2024, the EC confirmed the assignment of the printing tasks. Buck Press Limited is responsible for the Oti region. Acts Commercials Limited is responsible for the Western North region.
This decision comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) raised concerns. They questioned the transparency and fairness of the election preparation process. The NDC expressed doubts about Yasarko Printing Press Limited’s ability and impartiality to handle such an important electoral task. They earlier requested that the EC provide assurances against potential ballot tampering. They also urged the commission to maintain strict oversight over the contracted printing firms.
The EC began printing notices of poll and ballot papers on October 11, 2024. This occurred amid increased scrutiny from political parties and civil society organizations. The NDC emphasized the need for vigilance in the ballot production process, especially in regions with closely contested seats.
The press release was signed by Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey. It reaffirmed the EC’s commitment to transparency and impartiality. It assured stakeholders that the commission intends to provide equal oversight across all contracted firms. This action aims to safeguard the integrity of the election. The commission stressed that Buck Press Limited would comply with the same rigorous standards. Acts Commercials Limited must also ensure the security and accuracy of the ballot papers.
