Paramount Chief of Lower Axim Leads Raid on Illegal Mining Sites, Arrests Three for Galamsey

Paramount Chief of Lower Axim, Awulae Attibrukusu III, has taken decisive action against illegal mining operations in his area. He led a raid on two sites, Ewoku and Kegyina, resulting in the arrest of one Chinese national and two Ghanaian nationals involved in illegal mining activities known as galamsey.

The goal of this action is to halt the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, which has had severe impacts on Ghana’s river bodies and aquatic species.

Expressing shock at the extent of the damage, the Paramount Chief admitted that he had underestimated the proximity of the problem to his own community and the magnitude of the destruction caused.

He has pledged to hold any chief found complicit in the destruction accountable by ensuring they face judgment by the traditional council.

“We have the manpower, so why are we allowing these few illegal miners to continue causing harm to our land and rivers, jeopardizing the future of our country?” emphasized Awulae Attibrukusu III.

This operation, conducted by the Paramount Chief and sub-chiefs, demonstrates the traditional council’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding their land and natural resources. Furthermore, he urged the government to intensify efforts to combat the galamsey menace and protect the environment.
