On Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, Parliament passed the historic Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill.

The bill aims to promote women’s participation and representation in decision-making and has been in the works for over a decade without becoming law.

The Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill also aims to encourage efforts to address gender imbalances in socio-cultural life, politics, economics, and education in both private and public sectors, in accordance with Clause 4 of Article 17 of the 1992 constitution.

Its main objective is to progressively increase and actively involve women in public and active life to achieve a female representation rate of at least 30% by 2030, in line with the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
