A 3-year-old girl at Sefwi Akuraa in Wassa Amenfi West Municipality, a small community close to Samariboi, met her untimely death after she went missing for 3 days and was later found dead in a galamsey pit dug and left uncovered in the middle of the town.
In an account shared by the mother (Maame Yaa), she said she was in the room with her when she left to purchase watermelon. She came back and saw her playing with other kids and later couldn’t find her among them.
Maame Yaa explaining the incident to the media said she told her mother about her inability to find her child among the children playing, and they kept looking for her after 5 to 6 pm and could still not find her, only to find her lifeless body in the pit after 3 days.
The committee chair for the area, Mr Oscar Boafo, also speaking to the media said they’ve spoken to the miners to desist from the work and cover the left pits, they brought machines to cover the various pits but couldn’t do it because the machine was weak for the task.
He added that they have brought an excavator to fill the pit, so this unfortunate incident doesn’t occur again.
