Afenyo-Markin Urges Media to Focus on Public Issues Over Partisan Politics Ahead of Elections”

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has encouraged the media to prioritize issues that are important to Ghanaians instead of getting involved in divisive partisan politics.

With the upcoming December elections, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the crucial role of the press in bringing attention to topics that affect the well-being of the people.

Speaking at Parliament on Monday, June 10th, Afenyo-Markin urged the media to steer political discussions away from confrontational and unproductive debates.

He stated, “When we appear on your airwaves and engage in shouting, yelling, and insulting, stop us. Remind us that this is not the appropriate way to conduct ourselves.”

He underscored the media’s responsibility to the public, urging them to act as a check on political rhetoric and ensure that the conversation remains focused on tangible outcomes and community needs.

Afenyo-Markin also called on journalists to continue their watchdog role by holding the government accountable while also recognizing its achievements.

He added, “It’s an election year, so there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the government’s successes. At the same time, points out the challenges in the various communities. We need this, so we can address the needs of the people.”
