Major Mahama: Twelve get life imprisonment for lynching Ghana soldier

The Accra High Court after almost seven years has pronounced a verdict on the gruesome lynching of Major Maxwell Mahama by a mob in Denkyira Obuasi now the new Obuasi in the Central Region.

Twelve people out of fourteen suspects have been found guilty of abetment, conspiracy, and murder of the late soldier. William Baah, the then Assemblyman of the area, Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, John Boasi, Akwasi Asante, Charles Kwaning, Emma Baidoo and kwadwo Animah have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The court presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, a justice of the Supreme Court sitting as an additional judge, convicted the 12 based on the jury’s verdict.

Meanwhile, Bismarck Donkor and Bismarck Abanga were acquitted and discharged following a not-guilty verdict by the jury. A seven-member jury on Monday 29th January 2024 after about an hour of deliberations returned the verdicts, bringing an end to the trial that has been before the court since 2018.
