The majority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, who doubles as MP for Suame constituency, Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, says the president of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not assented to anti-witchcraft bill because the draft bill has not been presented to him yet.
“I must state emphatically that the bill has not been sent to the president for his assent, and the speaker knows about it, and I am surprised that he… made it appear as if the president is trampling upon the constitution.”
He further stated that he travelled outside the country, and in his absence, the bill was passed. He later detected some mistakes that need to be corrected before sending it to the president for his assent.
“Going through, i realised that they were major challenges. Things that parliament ought to pay attention to. Unfortunately, I dont know if because of rushing through, they did not pay attention to them. So when I looked at them, I invited our officers at the Legislative unit and drew their attention to them,” he asserted.
He emphasized that the president has not breached any law because there is nothing before him to assent to.
