The Denkyira Development Association (DDA) has noted with concern recent press reports that a mining company known by the name High Streets Company Limited has filed an application with the Minerals Commission for a permit to mine within the borders of the Kakum Forest Reserve. Whilst acknowledging the quick rebuttal and release by the Minerals Commission that it had refused the application, DDA believes that the Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2462 which formed the basis of the application must be reviewed by Parliament.
At the Back of this the President for the DDA, Joseph Banor Lokko in an interview with Chief Justice Oppong Mensah Cudjoe on National Agenda, Denkyiraman radio Morning Show, said looking at how Kakum National Forest Reserve has contributed to the Development of the country in terms of tourism, this shouldn’t happen that the forest reserve should be mined.
He continued that As a community organization dedicated to the preservation and sustainable development of the Denkyira State, which is partly covered by the Kakum National Park, DDA strongly expresses disapproval of any activity that may pose a threat to our precious natural resources.
Citing the advantages of the Kakum Forest Reserve Mr. Lokko said the Denkyira Development Association firmly believes that the Kakum Forest Reserve, renowned for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, is an ecological treasure that demands their utmost protection.
He continued that the Association notes that the reserve plays an indispensable role in supporting Ghana’s tourism industry, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire its breathtaking beauty, and the canopy walkway and immerse themselves in its natural wonders.
He ended by stressing that the DDA expressed their concern regarding the long-term impact of this legislation and therefore, they are calling upon the Parliament of Ghana to conduct a thorough review of LI -2462 to ensure that it aligns with the principles of sustainable development and provides adequate protection for the cherished natural resources.
DDA will vigorously resist any form of mining in the Kakum Forest Reserve, he stressed again.
Mr. Lokko also announced an open invitation to all stakeholders, including Government Agencies, the Traditional Council, Civil Society Organizations, Environmentalists, and Concerned Citizens, to collaborate and engage in productive dialogue to find equitable solutions that balance the needs of development, while preserving our natural heritage.
