DENKYIRA GALAMSEY DIALOGUE: ILLIGAL SMALL-SCALE MINING AFFECTING ENROLMENT – DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION.

The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Director of Education, Mr Antony Takyi, has said that illegal mining (Galamsey) has had an impact on student’s attendance and performance in some junior high schools in the municipality.

He made this observation during a roundtable discussion on illegal mining held on Wednesday 2nd August 2023, at the Royal Amonoo Hotel in Dunkwa when Denkyiraman Radio 91.9MHz   collaborated with Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and Minerals development fund to host the maiden edition of Denkyira Galamsey dialogue on the theme:

“Seeking the way out”.

According to him, the upsurge in the activities of illegal mining poses a threat to children who engage themselves in the illegality with the hope of making money quickly and easily. He added that young individuals in these communities tend to value galamsey more than education since they don’t understand its importance.

Mr Anthony Takyi, however, commended Denkyiraman Radio for organizing such a dialogue and urged parents to take the education of their children seriously by providing them with all their basic needs.
