Bawumia Presents Running Mate Choice to President Akufo-Addo Ahead of NPP Council Meeting

Denkyiraman Radio can confirm that the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has consulted President Akufo-Addo on his choice of a running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

According to Denkyiraman Radio source, a meeting took place last night at the Jubilee House.

During the meeting, Vice President Dr Bawumia presented his choice to the President.

Meanwhile, the NPP flagbearer is expected to meet with the party’s council to formally present his choice. If accepted, a formal announcement will follow.

On June 15, 2024, a survey conducted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) indicated that the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was widely preferred among party members to be the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia

But our sources said the president offered his advice and blessings to the presidential candidate of the NPP after the meeting.

Traditionally, the NPP has always had a presidential ticket that has either of the two candidates the presidential or vice-presidential hailing from any of the five Northern Regions or the southern part of the country mostly from the Akan regions, Ashanti, Eastern, among others.

With the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, hailing from the North East Region, any of the three candidates, if selected, would help the party to maintain the Christian/Muslim, North/South and Akan and non-Akan traditions the party has come to be identified with the last 32 years.

Of the three men, Dr Bryan Acheampong who was born 27 November 1972 is 51 years and is the youngest. Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is 56 and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum is 60.

He said the chosen candidate is a 56-year-old medical doctor who graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

“…He was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and won re-election in 2012, 2016 and 2020. He served on the Health Appointment and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

“In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him Education Minister and he now serves as the Energy Minister. The name is Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO,” he said.
