Government to Reinstate Road Tolls in 2025, Announces Finance Minister During Mid-Year Review

Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam revealed during the Mid-year fiscal policy review on Tuesday July 23 in Parliament that Government has concluded measures to reinstate road tolls in 2025.

On November 18, 2021, the Former Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta directed that tolls collected at the various tollbooths across the country be halted.

This directive came after the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta announced during his 2022 budget presentation that road tolls had been abolished.

But government has rescinded its decision and has authorized the development of a framework for reintroducing road and bridge tolls in 2025.

“Mr. Speaker, Cabinet has also granted approval for the disbursement of an additional 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis to settle outstanding claims relating to the financial management companies;
the establishment of a framework for the re-introduction of Road and Bridge
Tolls in 2025”, he addressed.

Dr. Amin Adam also noted that the government has approved “the operationalization of the integrated property tax system” and the amendment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act to reinstate the numeric threshold that was suspended in 2020.
