Ghana’s Population Surpasses 33 Million, Projected to Reach 52.47 Million by 2050

Ghana’s population has surpassed the 33 million mark and is projected to reach 52.47 million by 2050, according to the latest projections by the Ghana Statistical Service.

At the end of the 2021 population and housing census, Ghana’s population was 30.8 million. The statistical service predicts that between 2021 and 2030, 711,706 people will be added to the population each year, leading to a population of 37.24 million by 2030.

The country’s urban population is also expected to grow, reaching 60.7% by 2030 from the 56.7% urban population in 2021. This growth is anticipated to increase population pressure on Greater Accra by 2030.

By 2050, Ghana is projected to have a population over 60 years old, increasing to 10.8% from the current 6.5%.

Furthermore, Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, emphasized the need for renewed conversations around the age of retirement based on these latest projections.
