Don’t use breast milk for eye treatment, ophthalmologist warns

Breast milk or a lacting mother’s milk is produced by the mammary glands in the breast of females.
Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition for newborn infants.

In most Ghanaian homes or communities, Elderly people use breast milk as a medicinal solution for eye irritations.

However, to clear the doubt and curiosity, the Denkyiraman news stream engaged Dr LUKE OFORI KORANTENG, an Eye Specialist in an exclusive interview where he revealed that breast milk is not for eye care or treatment for any eye problems.

He explained that they’re bacteria that bring about infections in the eye and these bacteria live on food to survive, the breast milk is a source of protein food that will rather increase the amount of bacteria on the eye.

“The breast milk though is a sterile protein food, it’s never allowed to squeeze it on the eye as first aid.

A lot of people who suffer eye problems and decide to dwell on traditional means or Breast milk, tend to come over to the hospital when situations get worse.”, he noted.

Dr Luke continued that an individual should reach out for proper eye care if possible instead of relying on self-care and recommendations from traditional sources.

He added that the eye, just like other organs of the body is very delicate and should be treated by professionals to avoid wide spread of the problem or worse.
