The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is set to announce a significant ministerial reshuffle on Valentine’s Day, 14th February 2024. This will be the most extensive reshuffle since he took office in 2017. The list of ministerial appointments will be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, as per the requirement of the 1992 constitution, and the appointments will be announced in Parliament.
According to sources, the reshuffle is aimed at strengthening the party’s position ahead of the December election. As part of this, all ministers who lost their parliamentary seats during the party primaries or did not stand in their constituencies will be replaced with fresh hands. The new cabinet will mostly be made up of MPs.
One of the significant changes will be the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance, who has received criticism from his party’s MPs. The new Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to regional development efforts in the area.
Dr. Mohammed Adam Amin Anta, MP for Karaga and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, will replace Ken Ofori-Atta as the Minister of Finance designate. Adam is a veteran technocrat with extensive experience in the oil, gas, and financial sectors.
Other changes include Lydia Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, taking over as the new Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Andrew Agyepa Mercer, the Deputy Minister of Energy and MP for Sekondi, being appointed as the Minister of Tourism, and Henry Quartey, the new Interior Minister Designate, took over from his previous boss, Ambrose Dery.
Other MPs such as Ophelia Hayford Mensah, Fatimatu Abubakar, and Dr Bernard Okoe Boye will also be appointed as ministers. Additionally, several MPs will be named as Deputy Ministers.
Overall, President Akufo-Addo’s cabinet reshuffle is aimed at strengthening the party’s position and demonstrating its commitment to economic stability and growth.
