Akufo-Addo nominates three judges for appointment to Supreme Court

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has nominated three justices of the Appeal Court to the Supreme Court. The three nominee judges are Justice Yaw Asare Darko, Justice Anthony Henry Kwofi and Justice Richard Agyei Frimpong.

In a letter to the Speaker of Parliament read at the commencement of sitting on Friday (10 November), the president said the nominations have been made necessary by the emergence of three vacancies on the Supreme Court following the retirement of three senior justices, including the former chief justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah.

The presiding Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, accordingly referred the nominations to the appointments committee of the House for consideration.

The new appointments follow the retirement of recent justices of the Supreme Court – Justice Nene Amegatcher on 3 February 2023, the former chief justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah on 24 May 2023 and Justice Jones Dotse.

This leaves the current number of Supreme Court judges at 13, including the new Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

The appointments committee of Parliament is expected to vet the three appointees for possible approval or acceptance.
