Disgraced former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has revealed he was scared for his mother’s life after she went on a hunger strike.
Rubiales announced his resignation from his position on Piers Morgan Uncensored. It came after Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso filed a complaint with the high court after he kissed her on the lips during their Women’s World Cup celebrations.
The 46-year-old’s mother, 72-year-old retiree Angeles Bejar, had launched a hunger strike in August by locking herself inside a church near Malaga in an attempt to clear Rubiales’ name, who at the time was suspended by FIFA.
Bejar told a Spanish TV station in a dramatic WhatsApp exchange that she was prepared to die to clear her son’s name, insisting: “I will stay here as long as my body holds out. I don’t mind dying for justice because my son is a decent person and it’s not fair what they’re doing.
But the former hairdresser’s protest was cut short as she was rushed to hospital, with the parish priest of the church explaining: “She had not been feeling well because of the heat and everything else.
Her feet had become swollen and she was very tired. She had also become very nervous.”
Rubiales was asked about his mother’s hunger strike by Piers Morgan, to which he answered: “I was very scared for her. At a certain point, her ankle completely swelled up, and she suffers from hypertension.
